Frequently Asked Questions
HOW IS COUNSELING DIFFERENT THAN TALKING TO A FRIEND?
Counseling is a very different relationship than friendship and it is so much more than "talking about your feelings". I am trained to listen and make sure I am understanding you without judging or jumping to conclusions. In addition, Counseling is confidential, meaning that aside from a few safety issues, I cannot discuss your life with other people. You can talk about things that are sensitive and it will stay between us. That's a part of my professional requirements. Also, our work is goal-oriented. We will come up with a plan and work towards those goals. In addition to privacy and direction, I bring over ten years of experience helping people manage difficult things (panic attacks, self-harm and abuse). The odds are that I have already worked with the concerns you have which saves you time and money. There is one final difference I would like to point out. Counseling is a time that is all yours. You won't be imposing or burdening me, this is my job (and I love it!) and its a time for self-care without anyone else to take care or tend to for an entire hour.
HOW LONG WILL I BE IN COUNSELING?
Some people stay in counseling for a few months and others need more time. It just depends. I'm happy to discuss a personalized treatment plan and tentative timeline during our first session. Actually, it gives me great joy to watch my clients grow in confidence and achieve their goals to the point that they don't need my support anymore. It is one of my professional goals to work myself out of a job and help clients grow without becoming dependent on me or counseling
to be okay.
WHAT FORM OF PAYMENTS DO YOU ACCEPT?
I understand that counseling is an investment of time and finances. Cash, Credit and Check are accepted. Some clients have successfully used their Health Savings Accounts or Flexible Spending Accounts to pay for counseling. I do not file with insurance, however, you may be eligible for out-of-network (OON) reimbursement from your insurance for counseling services. I can provide you with a receipt for you file with directly with your insurance. My fee is $125 per session. Please let me know if you have questions about payment.
I HAVE BEEN REFERRED FOR EMDR. WHAT DO I DO?
It is not usual for counselors to tag-team to offer clients specialized services. If you have another counselor, I will need your written permission to talk to that person and ensure the best and safest care for you. You can process a traumatic event or memory with me and return to your established counselor. In case you have been referred by another health professional, we can work together with EMDR reprocessing as our goal. We can focus on that piece. More information on EMDR here.
